Company intelligence / Profile preview
Sino-American Shanghai Squibb Pharmaceuticals (SASS) is a historic pharmaceutical joint venture established in 1982 as the first US-China pharmaceutical partnership. Originally a collaboration between Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) and Sinopharm Foreign Trade, the company operates a large-scale manufacturing facility in Shanghai focused on producing a wide range of medicines, including cardiovascular drugs, antibiotics, and analgesics. In September 2025, BMS announced the sale of its 60% controlling stake in the joint venture to Hillhouse Capital as part of a strategic shift to focus on its core innovative portfolio in China. SASS remains a significant player in the Chinese market, providing high-quality essential medicines and maintaining robust manufacturing capabilities for both domestic and regional supply.
