Overview

SmartCells was a biotech startup out of MIT developing SmartInsulin, a glucose-responsive insulin therapy. Its core platform enabled auto-regulated drug release based on molecular biomarkers. At the time of its acquisition by Merck in December 2010 for up to $500 million, SmartInsulin had demonstrated preclinical proof of concept in animal models but had not entered clinical trials. Merck acquired SmartCells to further clinical progress and commercialization potential of this technology.
