SmartPill Corp.

The flagship product was the FDA-cleared and CE-marked SmartPill GI Monitoring System—an ingestible capsule that wirelessly measures pressure, pH, temperature and transit times throughout the gastrointestinal tract. It provided a less invasive alternative to scintigraphy or traditional endoscopy for diagnosing motility disorders such as gastroparesis and chronic constipation. The product was on the market for about 17 years before being discontinued by Medtronic in mid–2023[4][5].

Clinical studies demonstrated its utility in both research and clinical practice for evaluating gastric emptying time and total GI transit time. Its ease of use enabled larger-scale studies into GI physiology[4].

Limitations included difficulty swallowing for some patients and risk of capsule retention in those with strictures or obstructions[4].

After acquisition by Given Imaging in 2012 ($6M), then Medtronic via subsequent M&A activity, the product line was ultimately discontinued due to shifting corporate priorities rather than lack of efficacy or safety concerns[3][4].
