Overview

Smith New Court was a prominent British investment bank and stockbroking firm that played a pivotal role in the London financial markets during the late 20th century. Originally founded as Smith Brothers, a firm of stock jobbers, it evolved into a leading market maker and was particularly noted for its joint venture with N M Rothschild & Sons. The firm was a major player during the 'Big Bang' deregulation of the UK financial markets in 1986. In 1995, Smith New Court was acquired by Merrill Lynch for approximately $840 million, marking a significant consolidation in the global investment banking industry.
