Solvay Biologicals

Solvay Biologicals was the specialized vaccine division of Solvay Pharmaceuticals, headquartered in Weesp, Netherlands. The company was a major global player in the influenza vaccine market, best known for its seasonal flu product Influvac. It distinguished itself through the development of large-scale cell-culture-based production technologies for vaccines, providing a modern alternative to traditional chicken-egg-based manufacturing. In February 2010, the entire Solvay Pharmaceuticals business was acquired by Abbott Laboratories for approximately $6.6 billion. Following the acquisition, the unit operated as Abbott Biologicals before the majority of these assets were transferred to Mylan (now Viatris) in 2015. Today, the legacy of Solvay Biologicals continues through the ongoing production and distribution of seasonal flu vaccines under the Viatris portfolio.
