Company intelligence / Profile preview
Somatix Therapy was a pioneering biotechnology company focused on the development of ex vivo and in vivo gene therapies. Founded in the late 1980s, the company specialized in using retroviral vectors to engineer cells to produce therapeutic proteins. Their lead programs included genetically modified tumor cell vaccines for melanoma and renal cell carcinoma, as well as treatments for hemophilia and neurological diseases. In 1997, Somatix was acquired by Cell Genesys in an all-stock transaction, consolidating two of the leading players in the early gene therapy field.
