Somaxon's main product Silenor (doxepin) was FDA-approved in March 2010 for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty with sleep maintenance. The drug was made commercially available by prescription in the United States in September 2010. Clinical trials demonstrated maintenance of sleep, including into the seventh and eighth hours of the night, with no meaningful evidence of next day residual effects and an overall adverse events profile comparable to placebo.
