Songbird Hearing was a pioneering medical device company that developed and commercialized the world's first disposable hearing aid. Founded in 1997 as a spin-off from Sarnoff Corporation (formerly RCA Labs), the company aimed to provide affordable and convenient hearing solutions for the millions of adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Its flagship products, including the Songbird Disposable and Songbird Ultra, utilized digital signal processing and were sold through retail channels like CVS and Walgreens. Despite significant backing from major investors like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble, the company struggled with market adoption and financial sustainability, leading to its eventual closure and the sale of its brand assets in 2012.
