Southwest Biomedical Research Institute

Southwest Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI) was a non-profit research organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona, specializing in human genetics and cytogenetics. Founded in 1982 by Dr. Frederick Hecht and Barbara Hecht, the institute focused on the study of chromosomal abnormalities, birth defects, and the genetic basis of cancer. SBRI provided clinical genetic services and conducted extensive research that contributed to the understanding of hereditary diseases and genomic mapping. During its peak, it was a leading center for genetic diagnosis and counseling in the Southwestern United States. The institute also operated the Genetics Center, which provided specialized laboratory testing. SBRI eventually ceased independent operations in the late 1990s, with its legacy influencing the development of subsequent genomic research initiatives in the region.
