Specia, officially the Société Parisienne d'Expansion Chimique, was a major French pharmaceutical firm that operated as the primary medical specialty branch of Rhône-Poulenc. The company gained international recognition for launching chlorpromazine (Largactil) in the 1950s, a breakthrough that founded the field of modern psychopharmacology. In addition to its psychiatric portfolio, Specia was instrumental in the distribution of metronidazole (Flagyl) and various anti-infective agents. The company played a vital role in the mid-20th century pharmaceutical industry by translating chemical research into widely used clinical therapies.
