SpectraScience was a medical device company that developed and marketed light-based diagnostic systems for the early detection of cancer. Its flagship technology, the WavSTAT Optical Biopsy System, utilized laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy to provide real-time tissue analysis during endoscopy. The system was designed to help clinicians distinguish between benign and precancerous tissue in the colon and esophagus, potentially reducing the need for physical biopsies. Despite achieving CE Mark approval and commercializing its products in Europe, the company faced significant financial challenges and its SEC registration was revoked in 2021.
