Speywood Laboratories

Speywood Laboratories was a pioneering British biotechnology company focused on the development of specialized biologics and blood products. The company is most notable for developing Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA), a botulinum toxin type A product used to treat various neuromuscular conditions. Speywood also commercialized porcine Factor VIII for the treatment of hemophilia patients with inhibitors. Originally part of the Porton International group, the company maintained a close relationship with the Center for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR) at Porton Down. In the mid-1990s, Speywood was fully integrated into the French pharmaceutical company Ipsen. Today, its legacy continues through Ipsen's major manufacturing and R&D hub in Wrexham, Wales.
