Spherics was a biopharmaceutical company that specialized in the development of advanced oral drug delivery systems using proprietary bioadhesive polymer technology. The company's core platform, Spheromer, utilized bioadhesive microspheres designed to adhere to the gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby extending the transit time of drugs and significantly enhancing their bioavailability. This technology was particularly aimed at transforming immediate-release small molecule drugs into sustained-release formulations for chronic conditions. Its lead clinical candidate, SR-LD/CD, was a reformulated version of levodopa and carbidopa for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Founded on research from Brown University, the company attracted significant venture capital before its assets were acquired by Becton Dickinson in 2008.
