Spofa Vereinigte Pharma Werke

Spofa (Spojené farmaceutické závody) was the central state-owned pharmaceutical conglomerate in former Czechoslovakia, founded in 1946. It served as an umbrella organization for the nation's entire pharmaceutical industry, managing research, development, and production across multiple specialized plants. The company produced a vast portfolio of products, including essential medicines, vaccines, and active pharmaceutical ingredients for the domestic market and export within the Eastern Bloc. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Spofa was restructured and its various divisions were privatized. Major modern pharmaceutical companies like Zentiva and Teva Czech Industries originated from former Spofa production units.
