Stabilimento Chimico Farmaceutico Militare (SCFM) is Italy's national military pharmaceutical facility, based in Florence and managed by the Defense Industries Agency (AID) under the Ministry of Defence. Founded in 1853, the institution plays a critical role in public health by producing "orphan drugs" for rare diseases that are not economically attractive to private pharmaceutical companies. Notably, SCFM is the sole authorized producer of medical cannabis for the Italian healthcare system, manufacturing standardized products like FM1 and FM2. The facility also produces antidotes for chemical defense, emergency medicines, and specialized health products for the Italian Armed Forces and civilian population. Its operations are GMP-certified, combining military strategic functions with high-standard pharmaceutical manufacturing.
