Stauffer Chemical

Stauffer Chemical Company was a major American manufacturer of agricultural and industrial chemicals, founded in 1885. The company was a pioneer in the development of synthetic herbicides, particularly the thiocarbamate class, which became essential for weed control in corn, rice, and other major crops. In 1985, the company was acquired by Chesebrough-Pond's for $1.25 billion, marking the beginning of a series of corporate restructurings. Its agrochemical assets were eventually sold to Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and now form a historical part of Syngenta's portfolio. Stauffer is remembered for its significant contributions to agricultural biotechnology and its extensive manufacturing footprint in the United States.
