Stem Cells For Safer Medicines (SC4SM) was a prominent UK-based public-private partnership and not-for-profit company focused on enhancing drug safety through stem cell technology. Established in 2007, the consortium was a collaborative effort between the UK government and leading pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca, GSK, and Pfizer. Its primary mission was to develop a standardized bank of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells to predict adverse drug reactions, specifically hepatotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. By creating reliable human-based cell models, SC4SM aimed to reduce the reliance on animal testing and improve the efficiency of the drug development pipeline. Although the company was dissolved in 2012 after completing its initial objectives, its research significantly advanced the field of in vitro toxicology.
