Sterling Group, primarily operating through its flagship entity Sterling Biotech, is a global leader in the production of pharmaceutical-grade gelatin and fermentation-based Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Mumbai, the company specializes in complex fermentation processes to produce high-value molecules such as Lovastatin and various oncology drugs, including Doxorubicin and Epirubicin. Following a period of financial restructuring and insolvency, the company was acquired by the US-based precision fermentation firm Perfect Day in 2022, and in 2024, Zydus Lifesciences acquired a 50% stake. Today, Sterling Group serves as a major platform for precision fermentation, producing animal-free proteins alongside its traditional pharmaceutical and gelatin portfolio.
