Overview

Sterling-Winthrop Research Institute was the primary R&D division of Sterling Drug Inc. It was responsible for the development of several historically significant drugs, including the first quinolone antibiotic (nalidixic acid), the analgesics pentazocine and meperidine, and the inotropic agents amrinone and milrinone. The institute and its parent company were acquired by Eastman Kodak in 1988 and subsequently divested in 1994, with assets split primarily between Sanofi and SmithKline Beecham.
