Sterling-Winthrop Research Institute was the primary R&D division of Sterling Drug Inc. It was responsible for the development of several historically significant drugs, including the first quinolone antibiotic (nalidixic acid), the analgesics pentazocine and meperidine, and the inotropic agents amrinone and milrinone.
