Overview
Stiefel was the world’s largest independent dermatology pharmaceutical company prior to its 2009 acquisition by GlaxoSmithKline. It developed and marketed a broad portfolio of prescription and OTC products for major skin conditions including acne and psoriasis. Its leading products included Duac for acne, Olux E for dermatitis, Soriatane for severe psoriasis; it also pioneered benzoyl peroxide use in acne treatment with Sulfoxyl Lotion. At the time of acquisition by GSK in 2009 for $2.9 billion plus contingent payments ($3.6 billion total potential value), annual sales were approximately $900 million.
