Suntory Institute for Biomedical Research

The Suntory Institute for Biomedical Research served as the central research hub for the pharmaceutical division of the Japanese beverage giant Suntory. Founded in 1979, the institute was a pioneer in Japan's biotechnology sector, focusing on recombinant DNA technology and protein engineering. Its most notable scientific contribution was the cloning and commercialization of human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP), marketed as Carperitide for acute heart failure. The institute also successfully developed small molecule therapeutics, including the anti-arrhythmic drug Pilsicainide. Beyond cardiovascular health, the facility conducted extensive research into oncology and immunology. In 2005, Suntory divested its pharmaceutical interests, and the institute's operations were integrated into Daiichi Pharmaceutical, which later became part of Daiichi Sankyo.
