Surgeons for Smiles

Surgeons for Smiles is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality medical and dental care to underserved populations in developing countries. Founded in 1997 by Dr. Edward Zebovitz, the organization conducts surgical missions focusing on cleft lip and palate repair, gynecological surgeries, and general procedures such as hernia and thyroid surgery. The team consists of volunteer maxillofacial surgeons, anesthesiologists, and support staff who also provide education to local medical professionals to ensure sustainable care. Since its inception, the organization has completed over 50 missions in countries including the Philippines, Nigeria, Eritrea, and Bangladesh. The organization operates on the principle 'Invite us and we shall come,' responding to requests for surgical assistance worldwide. Funding is primarily sourced through private donations and the personal contributions of its leadership. Beyond direct surgical intervention, the group provides all necessary supplies and medications for its missions, with the exception of intravenous fluids. The organization's dual focus on compassionate care and professional enrichment helps build long-term healthcare capacity in the regions it serves.
