Surrogen

Surrogen was a U.S. biotechnology company focused on developing genetically engineered large animal, primarily swine, models of human disease for biomedical research and preclinical drug and medical device development. The company operated as the biomedicine subsidiary of Recombinetics and used gene-editing technologies to introduce human disease mutations into pigs to create more translational disease models than traditional rodent systems. Publicly described programs included models in tuberous sclerosis complex, neurofibromatosis, Alzheimer's disease, and phenylketonuria. Rather than advancing its own therapeutic drug pipeline, Surrogen's business centered on research tools and model creation services for pharmaceutical, medical device, and academic customers. Evidence from bankruptcy filings indicates Surrogen, Inc. entered Chapter 11 proceedings in November 2024, so it does not appear to be an active operating company as of 2026.
