The Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) is a clinical harm reduction facility located in Kings Cross, Australia, and is operated by Uniting. As the first supervised injecting facility in the Southern Hemisphere, it provides a safe, medical environment for individuals to inject pre-obtained drugs under the supervision of registered nurses and health education officers. The centre's primary objectives are to prevent opioid-related overdose deaths and reduce the transmission of blood-borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C. In addition to emergency overdose management, MSIC provides primary healthcare, counseling, and direct referrals to drug treatment and rehabilitation programs. Since its establishment in 2001, the facility has supervised more than one million injections and successfully reversed thousands of overdoses without a single fatality on the premises. It serves as a critical entry point into the broader healthcare system for a marginalized population that often avoids traditional medical settings.
