Synapse Technologies

Synapse Technologies was a Canadian biotechnology company dedicated to overcoming the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to deliver life-saving therapeutics to the central nervous system. The company’s core innovation was the p97 (melanotransferrin) transport system, a proprietary platform that utilizes receptor-mediated transcytosis to ferry drugs across the brain's vascular endothelium. By conjugating enzymes, small molecules, and other therapeutic payloads to the p97 protein, Synapse aimed to treat a variety of neurological conditions, including lysosomal storage disorders and primary brain tumors. The company was a spin-off from the University of British Columbia and maintained a strong academic foundation in molecular biology and neuroscience. In May 2002, Synapse Technologies was acquired by BioMarin Pharmaceutical for approximately $9.8 million, integrating its BBB-crossing technology into BioMarin's portfolio of treatments for rare genetic diseases.
