Synthelabo was a major French pharmaceutical company that played a pivotal role in the consolidation of the European life sciences industry. Founded in 1970, the company established a strong reputation for innovation in the central nervous system, cardiovascular, and urological therapeutic areas. Its most notable commercial success was the development of zolpidem, a blockbuster insomnia medication marketed globally as Ambien. In 1999, Synthelabo merged with Sanofi to form Sanofi-Synthélabo, a move that created one of the largest pharmaceutical groups in the world at the time. This entity later merged with Aventis to form the modern Sanofi. The company's legacy remains integrated within Sanofi's extensive portfolio of primary care and specialty medicines.
