Synthetic and Biological Developments (SBD) was a biotechnology company based in the United Kingdom, originally established as a spin-out from the University of Leicester. The company specialized in the discovery and development of novel small molecule prodrugs for oncology, utilizing a Targeted Enzyme Prodrug Therapy (TEPT) approach. Its lead candidate, SBD-101, was designed to be selectively activated within the tumor microenvironment, specifically targeting hypoxic regions to release potent DNA-damaging agents. This site-specific activation aimed to enhance therapeutic efficacy while significantly reducing the systemic side effects common in traditional chemotherapy. Although the company was dissolved in 2017, its research contributed valuable advancements to the field of bioreductive drug design and targeted cancer therapy.
