Synthetic Genomics Vaccines Inc. (SGVI) was a biotechnology company established as a joint venture between Synthetic Genomics Inc. and the J. Craig Venter Institute. The company focused on leveraging advanced synthetic biology techniques to revolutionize vaccine design and production, most notably through its collaboration with Novartis to develop synthetic influenza vaccine seeds. Its foundational technology, the Digital-to-Biological Converter (DBC), enabled the rapid translation of digital genomic sequences into physical DNA and RNA for vaccine candidates. This approach aimed to significantly reduce the time required to respond to emerging infectious disease threats compared to traditional egg-based methods. SGVI also explored the development of personalized cancer vaccines and other therapeutic applications of synthetic DNA. Although its parent company, Synthetic Genomics, later pivoted to biofuels as Viridos, SGVI played a critical role in pioneering the use of synthetic DNA for rapid-response vaccinology.
