Overview
SynuCa Therapeutics is a Danish preclinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing first-in-class, disease-modifying small molecule therapies for Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. Spun out of Aarhus University and the DANDRITE research group, the company targets the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) calcium transporter to correct neuronal calcium imbalances caused by pathological alpha-synuclein aggregates. Rather than targeting alpha-synuclein directly, SynuCa's approach intervenes upstream to restore calcium homeostasis and autophagy, enabling the clearance of toxic aggregates while preserving physiological SERCA function. The company's lead candidate, SYN-4569, is an orally available small molecule being advanced toward clinical trials for Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy (MSA), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).
