Overview
Targanta’s lead product candidate was oritavancin—a novel semi-synthetic glycopeptide antibiotic acquired from InterMune—which demonstrated potent activity against a broad spectrum of resistant and susceptible Gram-positive bacteria. Two pivotal Phase 3 trials for cSSSI met primary endpoints with efficacy and improved safety compared to standard therapy. The company also developed a preclinical platform for targeted delivery of antibiotics to bone tissue. In 2009, before commercial launch of its products, Targanta was acquired by The Medicines Company.[1][4]
