Overview

Telles was a joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) focused on the commercialization of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics under the brand name Mirel. The company utilized microbial fermentation to produce bio-based, biodegradable polymers from renewable resources like corn sugar. While primarily focused on industrial and consumer packaging, Telles' PHA technology had significant applications in the life sciences, including the development of resorbable surgical sutures, medical implants, and controlled-release drug delivery systems. The joint venture was terminated in 2012 when ADM withdrew from the partnership, leading Metabolix to pivot its strategy.
