Terumo Heart

Terumo Heart was a medical technology company specializing in mechanical circulatory support for patients with advanced heart failure. A subsidiary of the Japanese Terumo Corporation, the company was best known for developing the DuraHeart Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS), the first globally available ventricular assist device to utilize magnetic levitation technology. This innovation aimed to minimize mechanical wear and reduce the risk of hemolysis and thrombosis by eliminating contact between the pump's impeller and housing. Despite achieving CE Mark approval and conducting extensive clinical trials in the United States, Terumo Corporation decided to exit the ventricular assist device business and discontinue Terumo Heart's operations in 2017.
