The Eden Alternative

The Eden Alternative is a U.S.-based global 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on improving the well-being of elders and their care partners through person-directed, relationship-centered care. Founded in 1994 by geriatrician Dr. Bill Thomas and Jude Thomas, the organization provides education, consulting, membership, and implementation support for nursing homes, assisted living, life plan communities, and home- and community-based services. Its core approach is built around the Ten Principles of The Eden Alternative and the Domains of Well-Being, with the goal of reducing loneliness, helplessness, and boredom among older adults. Rather than developing drugs or therapeutics, it operates as a care-model and training organization serving the aging services and long-term care market. The organization appears active internationally and reports impact across more than 20 countries.
