The James Hutton Institute

The James Hutton Institute is a Scotland-based independent scientific research organization focused on crops, soils, land use, natural resources, and the environmental drivers of food security and resilience. Formed in 2011 through the merger of the Scottish Crop Research Institute and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, it conducts both fundamental and applied research spanning plant science, microbiology, genomics, ecology, data science, and rural systems. The institute is not a therapeutics-focused biotech or pharma company; instead, it develops scientific knowledge, tools, testing services, and innovation capabilities relevant to agritech, environmental science, and selected life science and health-adjacent applications such as crop quality, nutrition, and microbiome research. It also commercializes intellectual property and services through its wholly owned subsidiary James Hutton Limited and supports external life sciences and healthcare companies through campus facilities in Dundee and Aberdeen. Its work is particularly relevant to sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, biodiversity, soil health, and evidence-based land management.
