Therapeutic Human Polyclonals (THP) was a biotechnology company that developed a unique platform for the production of fully human polyclonal antibodies using transgenic rabbits. By engineering rabbits to express human immunoglobulin genes, the company created a system capable of generating diverse, high-affinity antibodies that could target multiple epitopes on a single pathogen or cancer cell. This approach was designed to overcome the limitations of monoclonal antibodies in treating complex diseases and to reduce the immunogenicity associated with traditional animal-derived polyclonals. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, THP attracted significant venture capital from firms like MPM Capital and OrbiMed. In March 2007, the company was acquired by Roche for $56.5 million. The acquisition allowed Roche to integrate THP's transgenic technology into its own research and development pipeline to enhance its antibody discovery capabilities.
