TheraSense

TheraSense was a pioneering medical technology company focused on developing advanced glucose monitoring systems for diabetes management. The company's flagship product, the FreeStyle blood glucose monitor, gained significant market share by requiring the world's smallest blood sample size and enabling less painful testing at alternative sites. TheraSense's core technology was based on a proprietary "wired enzyme" electrochemical sensor platform. In 2004, Abbott Laboratories acquired TheraSense for approximately $1.2 billion to bolster its presence in the rapidly growing diabetes care market. Today, the TheraSense legacy continues through Abbott's FreeStyle brand of glucose monitoring products.
