Company intelligence / Profile preview
Thermo BioStar, originally founded as BioStar, Inc., is a medical diagnostics company that pioneered rapid point-of-care testing for infectious diseases. The company is recognized for its proprietary Optical Immunoassay (OIA) technology, a platform that uses thin-film biosensors to detect pathogens through visual changes in light reflection. This innovation enabled high-sensitivity testing for conditions like Strep A and Influenza without the need for expensive laboratory instrumentation. In May 2002, the company was acquired by Thermo Electron Corporation for approximately $85 million. Following the merger of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific, the entity became part of Thermo Fisher Scientific's clinical diagnostics portfolio. Its products continue to serve the primary care and hospital markets globally.
