Thermogen

Thermogen was a Chicago-based biotechnology company that specialized in the discovery and development of novel enzymes for biocatalysis and molecular biology applications. The company leveraged a proprietary platform to identify and produce recombinant enzymes from extremophilic organisms, with a particular focus on cold-adapted enzymes that could operate at lower temperatures. These enzymes were marketed to pharmaceutical and chemical companies to improve the efficiency and specificity of complex chemical syntheses, particularly for chiral drug intermediates. In 2000, Thermogen was acquired by MediChem Life Sciences in a stock transaction valued at approximately $25 million to bolster their chemical synthesis capabilities. Following the acquisition, its technologies were integrated into MediChem's drug discovery services, which were later absorbed by deCODE genetics and eventually Amgen.
