ThyroTec was a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of selective thyroid hormone receptor (TR) modulators. The company's primary technology centered on small molecules that selectively target the TR-beta isoform, aiming to harness the metabolic benefits of thyroid hormones—such as lowering cholesterol and increasing fat metabolism—while avoiding the deleterious cardiac side effects associated with TR-alpha activation. Its lead program, GC-1 (sobetirome), was a first-in-class TR-beta selective agonist that demonstrated significant potential in treating metabolic disorders. ThyroTec was acquired by QuatRx Pharmaceuticals in 2004, which continued the development of its TR-beta selective platform.
