While initially focused on architectural and specialty lighting, the company's core technology, including its proprietary Lexel LED light source, found significant applications in the healthcare and life sciences sectors for medical illumination and surgical lighting systems. The company was a pioneer in color-mixing and light-management technologies that provided high-quality, controllable light essential for clinical environments. In 2007, TIR Systems was acquired by Royal Philips Electronics to bolster its Philips Lighting division's position in the emerging LED market.
