Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield was a leading managed healthcare company based in Virginia, serving as the state's largest health insurer prior to its acquisition. Originally established as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia, the company transitioned to a for-profit, publicly traded entity in 1997 under the name Trigon Healthcare, Inc. It provided a comprehensive suite of health insurance products, including HMO, PPO, and traditional indemnity plans, to millions of members. In 2002, the company was acquired by Anthem, Inc. (now Elevance Health) for approximately $4.04 billion. Today, its operations continue as part of Anthem's Virginia division.
