Company intelligence / Profile preview
United States Surgical Corporation (U.S. Surgical) was a pioneering medical device company that revolutionized the field of surgery through the development of surgical stapling and laparoscopic instruments. Founded in 1964 by Leon Hirsch, the company played a critical role in the transition from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive procedures. Its products, such as the Auto Suture line, became industry standards for wound closure and internal tissue ligation. After decades of market leadership, the company was acquired by Tyco International in 1998 for approximately $3.3 billion. It eventually became part of Covidien, which was later acquired by Medtronic in 2015, where its technologies remain a core part of the global surgical portfolio.
