Company intelligence / Profile preview
UHP Healthcare, historically known as The Wellness Plan, was a prominent non-profit health maintenance organization (HMO) based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1972 as Comprehensive Health Services of Detroit, it became a pioneer in the managed care industry, specifically serving Medicaid and underserved populations in Southeast Michigan. At its peak, it was one of the largest minority-controlled HMOs in the United States, providing comprehensive medical, dental, and optical services through a network of owned clinics and contracted providers. Following years of financial instability and regulatory oversight, the company was placed into rehabilitation by Michigan state regulators in 2003 and subsequently liquidated, with its clinical facilities transitioning into Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
