Ukrainian Anti-Cancer Institute

The Ukrainian Anti-Cancer Institute is a Vienna-based organization founded by Dr. Wassil Nowicky to develop and promote Ukrain, a semi-synthetic alkaloid derivative of the plant Chelidonium majus. The institute claimed that Ukrain possessed selective cytotoxic effects against cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting mitosis without damaging healthy tissue. Despite numerous small-scale clinical trials and publications, the drug never received approval from major regulatory bodies such as the EMA or FDA due to significant concerns regarding trial methodology and safety data. The institute's operations effectively ceased following a 2012 raid by Austrian authorities and subsequent legal proceedings involving the unauthorized sale of medicinal products. Today, the organization is primarily recognized for its controversial history and the lack of scientific consensus regarding its primary therapeutic candidate.
