Ultrafine was a prominent UK-based contract research and manufacturing organization (CRO/CMO) that specialized in the custom synthesis of complex organic molecules and radiolabeled compounds. The company was a leader in providing carbon-14 and tritium labeling services, which are essential for pharmaceutical companies conducting ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion) and clinical metabolism studies. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Manchester, Ultrafine served a global client base ranging from virtual biotechs to major pharmaceutical corporations. In 2004, the company was acquired by Sigma-Aldrich to enhance its SAFC (Sigma-Aldrich Fine Chemicals) division. Its expertise and facilities were subsequently integrated into the broader Merck KGaA life science portfolio following Merck's acquisition of Sigma-Aldrich in 2015.
