Union Carbide Nuclear Corporation, a subsidiary of Union Carbide, was a primary contractor for the U.S. government, managing critical nuclear research and production facilities such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While its core mission involved uranium enrichment and nuclear materials for defense, the company was a foundational player in the life sciences through its pioneering work in medical radioisotopes. It was responsible for the early production and distribution of isotopes like Iodine-131 and Technetium-99m, which became the backbone of modern nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging. Additionally, the company's Medical Products Division developed innovative clinical laboratory instrumentation, including the first centrifugal fast analyzers.
