Universal Health Care Group was a St. Petersburg, Florida-based managed care company that provided Medicare Advantage and Medicaid insurance plans. Founded in 2002 by Dr. Akshay Desai, the company grew into a significant regional player in the healthcare insurance market, serving over 140,000 members across 23 states at its peak. However, the company faced severe financial and regulatory challenges, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2013 and subsequent liquidation. The collapse was marked by allegations of fraud, embezzlement, and mismanagement, making it one of the most notable insurance failures in Florida's history. Following its closure, the company's estate has been involved in extensive litigation to recover funds for creditors.
