University Medical Discovery

University Medical Discovery (UMD) was a prominent Canadian venture capital firm and investment fund focused on the life sciences and biotechnology sectors. Established in the late 1990s with significant backing from the Canadian Medical Discovery Fund (CMDF), UMD played a critical role in the early-stage financing and incubation of university spin-offs in Toronto and across Canada. The firm was managed by MDS Capital Corp., the venture arm of the healthcare giant MDS Inc. UMD's portfolio included several pioneering biotech companies, such as BoneTec and matREGEN, which focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Following the restructuring of its parent and management entities, UMD's operations were eventually integrated into successor venture capital platforms.
