Overview

The Brahmachari Research Institute was founded in 1924 by Sir Upendranath Brahmachari, a pioneering Indian scientist and physician. The company was established to research and produce Urea Stibamine, a breakthrough small molecule treatment for Visceral leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) discovered by Brahmachari in 1922. At the time, the drug revolutionized tropical medicine by reducing the mortality rate of the disease from nearly 90% to under 10%. The institute operated as a private research and manufacturing facility in Calcutta, focusing on affordable treatments for endemic diseases in India. While no longer an active commercial entity in the modern biotech landscape, its legacy remains foundational to Indian pharmaceutical history.
