UPstart incubator

UPstart is the venture creation program of the Penn Center for Innovation (PCI) at the University of Pennsylvania. Launched in 2010, the incubator is designed to support Penn faculty and staff in the formation of new companies based on university-owned intellectual property. The program provides comprehensive support, including business model development, entrepreneurial mentoring, and connections to early-stage capital. UPstart has a strong focus on life sciences, biotechnology, and medical devices, reflecting Penn's research strengths. It has successfully facilitated the launch of over 100 companies, many of which have gone on to secure significant venture funding or be acquired by major pharmaceutical firms. By bridging the gap between academic research and commercial application, UPstart plays a critical role in the Philadelphia biotech ecosystem.
